Why taking up rollerblading could be the best strategy to help you stop smoking

Gone are the days where lighting up a cigarette was something you did to win over your high school crush. Today, smoking is seen as nothing more than an expensive, unhealthy habit. If you're feeling inspired to quit, these three revelations will give you with a solid start to becoming smokefree.

1. Nicotine is one of three aspects of your addiction

While nicotine is to blame for some of your urges for a cigarette, this is only part of the reason you smoke. Many people blame it for their addiction, but in truth, if you give up smoking, the nicotine has completely left your system after 2-4 weeks. After this point, the chemicals alone are no longer responsible for your smoking. To help you overcome the physical cravings, you can try patches, lozenges, gum or prescription medication available from your doctor.

2. Keep control of your emotions

Feelings. Everyone gets them. Funnily enough, they're also one of the major drivers behind the addiction to cigarettes. Your smoking might have developed into an automatic response to happiness, or as a way of coping with stress. Pinpoint which emotions trigger your craving to smoke, then be ready with an alternative - like listening to music or taking a walk - the next time that emotion strikes.

3. Change is good for you

Habits – who needs them? We all have them, and they're often subconscious, which makes them difficult to change. Once you've identified what's causing you to smoke, you can begin to stamp these things out. For example, you might smoke a cigarette every time you catch up with a friend for coffee, not necessarily because you need one, but because it's become an automatic association. Instead, try doing a different activity together, like rollerblading, a dance class or seeing a movie instead.
